2018 Chess

Congratulations to Cyrus for coming in third at the State K-8 Championships! He pulled off the biggest upset in recent memory defeating a player who was rated over 800 points higher than he!

The chess season started with another successful Aurora Winter Solstice as 55 players of all ages participated. Our five Airline students fared very well as Ruby won the U400 section and Cyrus tied for first in the U1200 section.

Check the Activity Calendar for dates of Chess Club and chessmaine.net Events section for local USCF tournaments.

Sports 2015-16

Outdoor Track

The first meet at MDI resulted in many ribbons and personal bests. 5th graders receiving their first ribbons were Cole (3rd-Shot Put), Cob (5th-Discus), Riley (5th-Discus), and Abbie (6th-200 Meter Dash). Ruby was fourth in 5-6 Shot Put. In the 7-8 division Cody had the highest finish - 2nd in the Discus. Sean won 4th place ribbons in both Long Jump and Discus. The boys' relay team placed sixth with Jacob, Ian, Cody, and Sean in 1:01.55.

The second meet was contested in almost perfect weather conditions, and the results showed! Sean won our first blue ribbon with a discus throw of 101' followed by Cody in 2nd with a throw of 98'. Almost all of the team set personal bests at the meet. It was great!

Our last regular season meet was at the Cohen School in Bangor. Cody won the discus event and many others won ribbons.

At the Almquist Invitational at UMaine we had nine members of our team qualify. Sean was the only medalist as he placed 5th in the discus. Other top finishes were Cody 7th in discus and 13th in long jump and Sean 8th in long jump. The relay team consisting of Jacob, Cody, Ian, and Sean ran their best time of the season 59.25.

2015-16 Chess (4/1)

The state team chess championships were Saturday, March 12 at UMaine. Our K-8 team finished tied for third in the state. Team members were: Cyrus, Sean, Cody, Natalie, and Brady. Ruby and Cole represented the school in the K-6 division. Cyrus competed at the Individuals and came in 5th place for K-6.

At the John Bapst tournament January 10, Cyrus tied for second in the Under 800 section with 3.0 pts and earned the 3rd place trophy on tiebreaks. Brady finished with 2.0 pts to continue his good season.

The 11th annual Aurora Winter Solstice was a record breaking event as 62 USCF members participated passing the previous high mark of 48 set last year. There were five sections set for players of all abilities. Six Airline students participated along with two alumni including four-time school champion, Nathan Gates, as well as a first-time community member. They were joined by the highest rated player in the state, Jarod Bryan (no relation!) (2245), and three others over 2000. There also was a 12 yr old girl, Cynthia Cui, from Fredericton, New Brunswick, who just returned from Greece where she participated in the World Youth Championships. It was an amazing field for a chess tournament in Aurora, Maine!

Brady had the best tournament of the Airline students winning the Under 400 section by going undefeated in four games. He gained 300 rating points for his success. Also participating were Cyrus (2.5 pts.), Cody (2.0), Sean (2.0), and Natalie (1.0) in the Under 800 section, while Brooke scored (2.0) in the U400 section.

It was a great tournament, and there is a bigger write-up on the chessmaine.net website. We hope to have many of our players competing at the Stillwater Montessori tournament.

2015-16 Basketball

All teams are going to Swan's Island Thursday, March 10. The ferry leaves Bass Harbor at 10:30. We return on the 3:00 ferry and should be back at the school by 5:15. There will be three games: girls, boys, and peewee.

The boys' and girls' teams will be playing their parents and various family members Friday, March 11 at 6:00.

Cody won the three-point competition and Sean won the Knockout Competition at the Mid-Maine League Shootout February 11. Brady made 13 out of 20 free throws to come in fourth. Again an excellent performance by members of the boys' team.  The boys' team defeated Etna-Dixmont 61-54 in the Division I semifinals before falling to Veazie in the Division I championship game. They still finished with the best record in school history (12-3)!  Congrats boys!

The girls' basketball team season ended when they fell to the Greenbush Panthers in semi-final action Wednesday. Down by only one at halftime 18-17, they lost their momentum as Greenbush took an eight point lead. Despite losing Jayden and Natalie to injuries, this team did very well. Playing with just seven players they did an incredible job this year finishing with a 7-8 overall record. Brooke and Kristin will be missed, but there are many young girls to keep the program in good hands.  Congrats girls!

The girls' team advanced to the Division II semifinals by defeating Dedham in a hard-fought game Monday, February 1. They now will take on Greenbush on Wednesday, February 3 @ Indian Island 3:30.

Hosting the Swan's Island Eagles for the first time in 18 years, the basketball teams finished off an excellent regular season with two wins. The girls ran their overall record to 6-7 with an exciting 35-32 win, while the boys cruised to their 11th victory in 13 games. the afternoon of games concluded with three quarters of peewee basket much to the delight of the crowd that had come from Swan's Island and around the Airline community.

The boys' basketball team finished the league season with a victory over Indian Island to secure second place in the league with a 8-1 record (overall 10-2). This is the best finish since Airline started playing basketball in the Mid-Maine League in 1989. They are scheduled to play Etna-Dixmont in the Division I semifinals next week. Specific date and time should be announced soon. Sean and Cody have led the team offensively, while Ian, Brady, Cyrus, Cob, and Cole have improved immensely to carry this team to its high success. A fracture in his arm has sidelined Brady. We hope that it heals quickly.

The girls' basketball team finished 3-6 and tied for 7th with Indian Island.

The Airline Jets defeated the Greenbush Panthers in both girls' and boys' games January 14. The girls held on to defeat the Panthers by three 32-29 to even their league record at 3-3, while the boys went to 5-1 and clinch a winning league record for the first time in 24 seasons! It's been amazing that both teams have done so well considering the small numbers and overcoming adversity. Next week the teams travel to Bangor Tuesday to take on Penobscot Christian before returning home to face the Beech Hill Bucks on Thursday.

Airline basketball teams defeated both Dedham teams January 8. The girls were led by Brooke and Kristin as the team played their first game since losing Natalie to injury. The young girls played their best game yet to help hold Dedham to less than 20 points.

In the last games before Christmas break, the boys were down 17-2 to Etna-Dixmont then mounted a furious comeback to take the lead 22-21. They then built a ten point lead in the 4th quarter before holding on to win 44-40. The boys moved to 3-0 in the league and 5-1 overall. The short-handed girls fell 33-22 to Etna-Dixmont to drop to 1-2 in the league and 3-3 overall.  In a game against  All Saints at the Bangor Rec Department the boys built a big lead and held on to defeat the Saints. They were led by Sean (25 pts) and Cody (23 pts). The girls lost their game by two in the nightcap.

 2015 Cross Country

The big cross country meets are complete. They started with the Small Schools Championships with 200 runners completing the 1.9 mile course. The girls finished 5th out of 16 schools. Then over 280 runners competed in the Coastal Division Championships Thursday, October 22. Again our girls team finished in 5th, our best result ever in many, many years. Finally we hosted the Invitational which traditionally draws the best runners and teams from eastern Maine.  Sophie, Kate, and Abbie had PR's while Natalie, Grace, and Mena helped lead the team to a very respectable result at this "elite" competition. For the boys, Brady and Cob set PR's while Sean had a mishap that prevented him from finishing. As with the whole season, the runners put forth their best effort. Thanks runners for making this a truly fun fall!

Fall Sports 2012

The soccer team  lost to Greenbush in the championship game 5-2.  It was a very exciting game as the Panthers raced to a 3-0 lead and then the Jets responded with two goals to get within one.  There was a chance to tie the game on a penalty kick, but the Greenbush goalie denied Sam's attempt.  The Jets came home with the runner-up trophy.  Their season was a nice to follow up to their undefeated campaign of 2011.  Greenbush was the only team to defeat the Jets, and they had dropped down to join the coed league after being unable to field two teams.  The Greenbush enrollment is almost four times the size of the Airline.  Special kudos to Christy Sheehan who has volunteered her time to run the soccer program and has attracted so many interested students to the program. Thanks Christy and great season Jets!

Cross Country Wrap-up

We had a small team this year with only four boys and two girls sticking with it the entire season. The runners did an excellent job again and represented the school admirably. For the 16th time in 22 years we were awarded the sportsmanship plaque; the league has changed the way of presenting this award over the years, but we still prevail. I was very proud of the way our runners represented the school this year.

Their performance on the course also was excellent. Oliver led the way again for the boys and managed to improve his personal best at our course by over one minute. His fastest time being 12:47.  Max and Zack showed renewed determination as well this year and set PR's at many of the courses. Ian continue to enjoy cross country and worked much harder at practices than in the past.

On the girls' side Jayden led the way for the second straight year and also set a PR on our course of 14:34. Natalie worked hard all season and had better times than last year at away meets. As 5th graders they both showed great enthusiasm for the sport and a desire to improve. We're all looking forward to next fall; only Oliver will be leaving us and taking his talent to high school.  Good luck Ollie!

Sports 2011-12

Chess and Other Competitions 2011-12

The Individual Championships were held March 17 at the University. Cyrus (K-3) and Zack (K-6) were both competitive in their respective sections.

The State Chess Team Championships were held Saturday, March 3 at the University of Maine in Orono. Ten students made up three teams at the competition. Zack, Laddy, Max, and Cody were able to win two games a piece. The Jr. High team finished fourth out of the nine schools competing in the K-8 section. Zack, Max, and Laddy were joined by Oliver and Christian on the K-8 team. Cody and Natalie competed in K-6, while Jacob, Cyrus, and Ruby competed in K-3.

The Aurora Winter Solstice was held Sunday, December 11 at the school.  We had an unexpected Expert stop in to play with two of the top ranked players in Maine.  Ted Belanoff chose our tournament as his Maine tournament en route to playing in all 50 states during his year off from college.  He was unable to secure the top spot when both Matthew Fishbein and Roger Morin were able to play him to a draw.  Max was able to win the U600 section of the tournament.  Fourteen chess players went to Ellsworth on the 12th to play with students from many other schools. We had an excellent time and look forward to our next chance to play.  There is also chess club after school on select Fridays. Many chess dates are listed below, and also check the Activity Calendar for other opportunities to play chess.  ChessMaine.net is still the best source for USCF rated events.

School Chess Championship:  1st - Laddy,  2nd - Zack, 3rd - Max, 4th - Irene

Basketball

Our trip to Swan's Island on Friday, March 23 was fun as usual. Both peewee players and varsity players combined to compete against Swan's Island in a girls' game followed by a boys' game. All the youngsters had plenty of playing time. The food was wonderful and we look forward to returning again in the future.

The parent-kid game was held Friday, March 16. The parents had to find "replacements" who were younger and, obviously, still practicing to take their place. Alumni Haley DeLuca Lowell, Ben Wright, Coral Guerrero, and Adrianna Keefe led the "old-timers" to a hard fought victory.

We had six players compete in the Shooting Competitions at Dedham Wednesday, February 15.  Sam was able to win the foul shooting by making 13 of 20 shots. Christian (3-pt), Skyler (Knockout), Irene (Foul shooting), Laddy (3-pt), and Veronica (Knockout) were other other competitors. We will have a Parent-Kid game shortly in March. Peewee basketball will be starting when we get back after break.

Unfortunately both teams lost in their opening playoff games. The boys played better than previously against a very athletic Calvary team falling 41-15. In the later game, the girls lost 20-19 in a real nail-biter.

Non-league games with Cave Hill turned into amazing games. Unfortunately the Jets ended up on the losing end in both games by one point! Both squads were preparing for their respective playoffs and provided the most thrilling games of the year.  A last second shot in the girls' game by Laddy went in and out.  They came up just short after rallying from 8 down with less than 90 seconds to go.

The final league games were played Tuesday, January 24 at the Veazie School.  Both Jets' squads lost, but the games were both entertaining and competitive. The girls finished with a 3-6 league record good for 7th place and will be the number two seed in the lower bracket.  The boys finished 1-7 and 8th in the nine team boys' league. The playoff schedule shall be determined next week - hopefully by Tuesday.

Last week at the Calvary Chapel School the Airline Jets basketball teams had mixed results.  The girls' team won their third straight league game, while the boys fell to Calvary boys.  Both Airline teams won against Beech Hill Wednesday, January 18.  The girls pulled away in the second half, while the boys were able to outlast the battling Bucks 43-40.  The boys relied on Sam's key steals and Christian's career high of 11 points.  In the girls' game Veronica was the leading scorer.

The girls basketball team defeated Penobscot Christian 40-38 on Tuesday, January 10.  The PC team got out to a quick 9-0 lead before the Jets went on a 24-8 spurt to lead by seven at half time.  In the third quarter the Penobscot Christian team rallied to tie it.  But the Airline Jets were not to be denied as they pulled ahead and held on for a two point victory. Laddy (16), Veronica (12), and Ayana (8) all made clutch shots at key times.  Natalie played great defense and Irene played scrappy at both ends of the floor. This was the first league win of the season for the Jets.

The basketball teams returned from break to play tough Indian Island teams.  Unfortunately they both lost, but there were many positives for both teams.  In the boys' game, Skyler had his best shooting performance of the year, Sam was again the high scorer, and Christian had his best overall game to date. On the girls' side, Irene had her best game, Ayanna was terrific on the defensive end, and Laddy led the way with 14 points.

Friday, December 16, the Airline teams gave great efforts before finally losing their basketball games to Greenbush.  In the girls game, the Jets led early but succumbed to the pressure from the Lady Panthers.  Veronica led the team in scoring.  In the nightcap the Greenbush boys raced to an early lead and then had to fend off a feisty and shorthanded Jet squad.  Austin was the high scorer for the boys making up for Skyler's absence from a hand injury and Sam playing hurt with a recently dislocated finger.

On Tuesday, December 6 the Jet teams defeated the Beech Hill school teams.  The girls won comfortably 45-16, while the boys held on to a three point victory 26-23. Previously the teams lost their league and home openers to All Saints on December 1.  The boys fell to a much taller All Saints squad in the opener while the girls lost by six in the nightcap in a rematch of last year's championship game.  Sam led the boys' team in scoring while Laddy paced the girls.

The basketball season opened November 17 with games at Indian Island.  Both teams fell to the Warriors, nevertheless both teams showed improvement throughout their games and took away positives that will help them in their upcoming league schedule.  Sam, Oliver, Zack, Max, Skyler, and Josh all scored points while Christian, Gabe, and Austin all helped out on defense against the much-taller opponents.  All nine players are back from last year's squad and look improved over their past performance.  The girls' game saw the Jets fall 48-37.  Laddy scored 21 points including five three-pointers!  Veronica added ten in defeat.  Upper-classmen Ayanna, Irene, Mia, and Savannah played hard throughout while fourth-graders  Natalie, Jayden, Brooke, and Kristen got a chance to play in their first-ever game.  They battled hard the whole way and gained valuable experience for their season ahead.

Fall Sports

Soccer wins championship!

The soccer team scored early in the championship game and never looked back winning 6-0 to complete the season undefeated and untied.  It was a total team effort as everybody contributed in the final game of 2011.  8th graders Laddy, Isaiah, Christian, and Gabe were all instrumental in the victory and will be missed next fall.  It is hard to single any one individual for this great season because it was truly a TEAM effort.  If not for the well-rounded play, it would not have been an undefeated team.  Sam and Max led the team statistically on offense, but many of the crucial goals were scored by others - Ayanna in the semi-final and Laddy in the championship.  Midfielders Oliver and Isaiah did an excellent job of moving the ball into the offensive end while Christian, Veronica, and Ryan were there to clear the defensive end.  Zack in the goal was spectacular throughout with aggressive play and excellent saves. Skyler, Gabe, and Savannah also played important roles in the team's offensive success.  Coach Christy did a great job of finding the right spots for her players and getting them to understand positioning.  It will be a long while before anyone forgets this season.  Go Jets!

What an exciting semifinal soccer game between Indian Island and the Jets!  Airline won 4-2 in overtime.  Indian Island led 1-0 at halftime before Max scored to make it 1-1. Then late in the second half Sam converted on a penalty kick to give the Jets their first lead.  With time winding down Indian Island was able to push the ball just over the goal line for the equalizer.  In the second half of overtime Ayanna scored to put the Jets ahead for good.  Sam added insurance with his second goal of the game with a little over a minute remaining.

The soccer team finished the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record defeating Indian Island 3-2. Building a 3-1 lead going into the second half, the Jets gave up a goal with 11 seconds remaining for the final margin.  They also beat the Beech Hill Bucks 5-0 Friday afternoon.  It was a complete team effort as each player seemed to have one of their better games.

Cross Country

The last meet took place  October 27.  The Airline Invitational saw 295 runners from 19 different schools brave the cool weather and perform like champions.  Camden-Rockport traveled the farthest, but that did not stop them from sweeping both races.  In the girls' race the competition was close as All Saints was only 9 points behind.  Erica Jensen from Waterville won the girls' race, while Colin Glencross of the Doughty School in Bangor was the boys' winner.  Many Airline runners had their personal bests for their home course; Jayden, Kristin, Max, Zack, Ian, and Laddy in her last race all bettered their previous marks.   Oliver, Sam, and Natalie also competed and had very good times for such a cold day.

The Coastal Cross Country Championships were held October 19 on the Airline course for the 21st straight year. There were 286 runners from 15 schools.  The Bay School won the boys' competition while Dedham won the girls.  Laddy, Savannah, and Jayden received ribbons in the girls' race while Oliver garnered the only ribbon for the Airline boys.

On Thursday October 13 over 230 runners and 18 schools attended the PVMSCCL Small School Championships. The Bay School from Blue Hill won the boys' team competition with All Saints Catholic School from Bangor came in second.  In the girls' competition All Saints prevailed followed closely by Dedham. Isaac Christiansen from Mountain View won the boys' race while Amanda Boyd of Dedham won the girls' race. Check http://www.sub5.com/pvcxc/results/results11/results11.htm for full results.  Laddy led Airline girls to an 8th place finish coming in 14th while Oliver's 29th spot led the boys to a similar team standing.

Both Airline cross country teams came in second at Cave Hill  Thursday, October 6 in a four school meet just like the previous Thursday at Dedham.  Laddy won at Cave Hill and finished 3rd at Dedham while Savannah was 5th and 9th, Jayden 8th and 13th, Natalie 10th and 14th,  and Kristin 20th and 26th.  Oliver (8th), Sam (14th), Max (18th), Trevor (19th), Zack (20th), and Bryan (21st) also had excellent times for the boys at Dedham.

On Monday, September 26, Sumner High School saw over 300 runners from 15 different schools compete in the 14th Parker Pruett Cross Country Invitational.  Laddy finished 15th out of 170 girls and Oliver finished 26th out of 130 boys. The boys team finished ninth while the girls finished eleventh.  September 22 the girls cross country team finished second in  a meet with five other schools. They were paced by Laddy's second place finish. Savannah, Jayden, Natalie, and Kristin were the other scorers for the team. Brooke also ribboned. In the boys race Oliver again led the way.  In the heavy rain September 15 at Ellsworth,  Laddy (3rd) led the way for the girls.  On the boys' side Oliver paced the team with a 6th place finish.

Outstanding Performance: Oliver, Laddy        Most Improved: Jayden

2010-11 Sports Wrapup

The girls' softball team had an excellent season that ended in the league semifinals. There were many memorable moments and top performances, and the team also earned the league Sportsmanship Award for their efforts.

Anna pitched the first perfect game in school history in their last regular season game striking out 14 of the 18 batters she faced. Haley did an excellent job of preserving the perfect game with her catching.

At the Almquist Invitational Track Meet Anna and Haley received medals while Savannah, Laddy, Christian, Alina, and Adrianna turned in excellent performances. Anna was second in both the discus and shot put, while Haley finished third in the shot put. The track season, plagued by poor weather, still went well. There were sixteen members of the squad including Cayd from Dedham.

The Airline Jets girls basketball team defeated All Saints 24-21 to win the Division II Championship of the Mid-Maine League. It was a great team effort as the girls led from start to finish holding off a late surge by the Saints. Two three pointers were just off the mark in the waning seconds. This is the first championship for the girls in a number of years. The roster included just eight girls: Anna, Haley, Adrianna, Alina, Laddy, Veronica, Savannah, and Mia.  The Airline boys fell in their opening round game to Calvary Chapel and finished with a league mark of 1-8.

The coed soccer team finished with an overall record of 5-3. They received both the Runner-up Trophy as well as the Sportsmanship Trophy for the Mid-Maine Coed Soccer League. The team consisted of 14 players: Anna, Andrew, Haley, Adrianna (8th Graders), Gabe, Christian, Laddy (7th Graders), Irene, Veronica, Oliver, Sam, Skyler (6th Graders), and Max and Zack (5th Graders).

The cross country team was led by previous outstanding performers Haley and Oliver. Sam, Trevor, Zack, Max, and Savannah also ran this year. Haley set a personal best in her final home meet.
